Top 5 Fun Things to Do in San Diego
San Diego's perfect weather is reason enough to go out and enjoy all the outdoor activities it has to offer. Whether you're a tourist from out of town, a local, or a foodie, San Diego (or America's Finest City as we like to call it) offers a year-round variety of fun things to do with the family. Here's a list of the top 5 fun things to do in San Diego.
1. Hotel del Coronado
The iconic Hotel del Coronado is the perfect spot for a getaway. The Del, as the locals call it, was the largest single resort in the world when it opened in 1888. Its charming Victorian architecture and location right on the beach will surely make you feel as if you're on a proper vacation. Notable past guests include Marilyn Monroe, various Presidents, and L. Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz. A fun fact is that L. Frank Baum found inspiration for creating the Emerald City during his stay at the Del.
2. Balboa Park
No visit to San Diego is complete without a visit to Balboa Park, the city's cultural hub and home of the world-renown San Diego Zoo. The rich history of San Diego can be found at Balboa Park. Stroll around the park on a lazy Sunday--or any other day--to admire its gardens, check out one of its many museums, or go people watching on its main walkway where you'll also find some vendors and street performers.
3. Fashion Valley
Fashion Valley is a shopping center centrally located in the city of San Diego with over 200 stores including Gucci, Macy's, and Nordstrom. Come here to shop (window shopping also counts), dine at one of the numerous eateries like the Cheesecake Factory or P. F. Chang's China Bistro, or watch a movie at AMC Theatres.
4. Torrey Pines State Reserve
The absolute best spot in San Diego to go hiking is at Torrey Pines, if only for the beautiful views of the Pacific. The unassuming mountain in the background is where all the magic happens. The hike up any of its numerous trails is an easy one and shouldn't take more than one to two hours round-trip. A particular favorite is the Beach Trail which eventually takes you down to the beach. The trail is the perfect length for an outing, and you can reward yourself by getting your feet wet as you walk along the shore to admire the sparkling water and surrounding sandstone cliffs.
5. San Diego or Tijuana Food Tour
San Diego was named one of "America's best cities for foodies" by Travel & Leisure magazine. We also just received our first Michelin-Starred restaurant thanks to Addison in Del Mar. Even without the praise, foodies in San Diego have always known and appreciated the wide variety of quality food options available in our own neighborhood from Chinese to Mexican and everything in between.
Our proximity to Mexico means that delicious and authentic Mexican food is never far away. You can take one of several food tours in the area. Wild Foodie Tours, in particular, specializes in Chinese and Mexican cuisine where you eat, play, and travel with locals. If you wish to enjoy a traditional Cantonese dim sum brunch with culture and history or want to experience authentic Mexican street food like grilled marlin tacos and carne asada tacos with handmade tortillas, make sure to sign up for an exciting food tour. After all, what's better than a fun day trip that combines food, culture, and adventure all in one?
San Diego's abundant sunshine makes it the perfect location for outdoor activities.
